Dollface Yorkies
Dollface yorkies is a phrase to watch out for when you are looking for a good quality Yorkshire terrier. Like “teacup” or “toy” yorkie, these phrases are meant to trick you into thinking you are buying something unusual when, in fact, you are investing in a regular yorkie who may even be less healthy than normal.
The term dollface yorkies calls to mind a petite dog with a sweet face, which are both common Yorkshire terrier traits. However, dollface yorkies are generally those which are smaller than average. You see, in any litter of yorkies (or any breed, for that matter) you may end up with some dogs which are smaller and others which are larger. There's nothing special about that.
Some breeders deliberately attempt to breed yorkies in order to produce an entire litter of smaller than average yorkies. This is bad for several reasons. First, in order to breed “dollface yorkies,” one must start with dollface yorkies. Unfortunately, yorkies weighing less than four or five pounds have very difficult pregnancies which almost always require a C-section and sometimes lead to the mother's death. Second, yorkies weighing around three pounds as adults are more likely to have health problems and usually do not live as long as standard size yorkies.
Even knowing this information, some potential owners are still drawn to ads promising “dollface yorkies.” There are a couple of reasons why you should not be one of those owners. For starters, the breeder is misadvertising the puppies. The purpose for this misrepresentation is usually so they can charge more for the puppies than usual. People have paid double or triple the cost of a traditional yorkie for these “dollface yorkies.” The worst part is that they are paying more for an inferior dog who will end up costing them more in vet bills.
Another reason why “dollface yorkies” breeders should be avoided is that they are not reputable breeders in the first place. While you may have seen ads on the Internet and in your local newspaper selling puppies, most of these breeders should be avoided. A reputable breeder who breeds high-quality yorkies never has to advertise to sell a litter. Instead, potential owners will usually come to them and leave a deposit to purchase the puppies even before they are born. Yes, there is often a waiting period because these breeders are in demand, but the wait is worth it because in the end you'll have a healthier and better quality puppy.
When you're looking for a yorkie, you shouldn't be persuaded by these type of marketing phrases. Instead, you need to focus on finding a good breeder whose interest is in whelping great puppies not in selling people on the false promise of dollface yorkies.
